PSHE

Intent:
At Manorcroft, our intention is for all children to develop the skills and knowledge to become active, resilient and successful at the end of primary school and beyond. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and to realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. Children need to have the skills and knowledge to keep themselves healthy and safe, with a good understanding of their emotional wellbeing, physical and mental health. We want them to know how to help themselves or to have the self-confidence to ask for help in order to enhance their own future potential and life chances. When the children eventually leave us at the end of Y6, our hope is for them to be responsible global citizens, who show tolerance and acceptance of other beliefs, religions and life choices.

Implementation:
EYFS
In YR, PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education) is taught through the JIGSAW scheme of work as well as being embedded throughout the curriculum. Statements from Development Matters in the EYFS as well as the PSED Early Learning Goals are used to inform planning and experiences.

KS1 and KS2
In Y1 - Y6, PSHE is taught through the JIGSAW programme which is a comprehensive scheme that is fully compliant with the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance. JIGSAW is a spiral, progressive scheme of work which covers all objectives and ‘aims to prepare children/young people for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world’. JIGSAW places a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, social skills, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. It allows children to develop their emotional awareness, concentration and focus through the use of mindfulness. In addition to Relationships Education, at Manorcroft we also teach aspects of sex education within the JIGSAW programme.

PSHE is taught through JIGSAW's six themes with each year group studying the same unit at an age appropriate level. It is taught within and beyond the classroom as part of our commitment to outdoor learning. The six themes are:

  • Being Me in My World - which is delivered within Forest School sessions
  • Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me (including Sex Education)

JIGSAW also identifies links to British Values and SMSC, and is taught in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and ethos of the school. In addition to the JIGSAW program, aspects of PSHE are also delivered within the wider curriculum as it forms an integral part of the whole school ethos. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Visitors, including the emergency services and the school nurse, complement the PSHE curriculum and offer additional learning experiences for the children
  • The 'Different but Normal' resources provide further opportunities for the children to develop their understanding of disabilities and caring
  • Participation in mental health themed days and weeks further develop the children’s understanding of mental health, eg. Hello Yellow day
  • Assemblies are planned to include British Values, PSHE and SMSC, and additional sessions are added as appropriate that would benefit the whole school

Impact:
At Manorcroft, we believe that our meaningful PSHE curriculum, skilfully taught and delivered by the staff team, enables our children to develop the skills and knowledge to:

  • Approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate through modern life
  • Understand and manage their own emotions
  • Begin the journey to becoming healthy, open-minded, respectful, responsible and active members of society
  • Appreciate difference and diversity
  • Understand and manage their own physical and mental health
